The Low Road is a scenic ride to Taos along the Rio Grande River.
Beginning in Espanola, NM, proceed north on NM-68 passing Ohkay Owingeh and Alcalde. Beginning in Velarde, the road narrows to one lane each way along the river valley and there is limited if any cellular service. As the road winds along the with the river, there are many spots to pull off for a scenic photo, look out over the river and see the floaters on their inner tubes, etc. In Embudo, you can stop to visit the classic gas station museum. Continue on through Rinconada and Pilar, where the road diverges from the river, gaining elevation. Once atop the hill, it’s a smooth straight ride into Taos. Ride is about 44 miles.
